Vanguard Transformational Leadership Course (VTLC)

The Vanguard Transformational Leadership Course (VTLC) is designed to foster holistic leadership development. The program integrates David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle, emphasizing a dynamic learning process through four stages: Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. Participants are immersed in a comprehensive, experiential leadership model that blends moral leadership theory with practical coaching techniques. Upon successful completion, participants earn 21 PDC / 2 CEU credits through Columbus State University’s (CSU) Leadership Institute (an accredited institute of higher learning) and a 24-hour CCE ICF Certificate.

The VTLC will be offered in a hybrid format, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for all participants. We will provide five online sessions, each lasting 2.5 hours, scheduled daily from Monday through Friday. This will be followed by a 8-hour in-person training session on Saturday.

Vanguard Professional Coaching Certification (VPCC)

The Vanguard Professional Coaching Certification (VPCC) is an ICF Level 1, 61-hour program designed to develop professional coaches through the Vanguard XXI Coaching Model. Upon completing the course requirements, students may pursue credentialing as an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Associate Certified Coach (ACC). This course is ideal for leaders in any capacity who want to enhance their coaching and leadership skills to improve themselves and their organizations. We foster an inclusive, psychologically safe learning environment, ensuring participants build lasting relationships that continue in their professional journeys.


Prerequisite to this course is completion of the Vanguard Transformational Leadership Course (VTLC). The 24-hours of ICF CCE credit will transfer into this course and participants will complete an additional 37 hours (27 hours of instruction and practice + 10 hours of ICF required mentor coaching = 37 hours), totaling 61 hours.

Javier Lopez is a proven and strategic leader with extensive experience and a comprehensive background in leader development and organizational dynamics. He has spent over two decades leading and developing individuals and high-performance organizations as an Executive Coach (ICF ACC), Senior Leadership Instructor, Senior Director, and curriculum developer. Javier served in the US Army on active duty for over 25 years and had distinguished himself as a battalion commander.

Dr. Phil McKinney II has spent over 30 years in ministry, higher education, and leadership, working in discipleship, family ministry, coaching, leadership development, spiritual direction, and pastoral counseling. He is a professional ICF-certified (PCC) life, leadership, executive, and mentor coach and is a certified practitioner of DISC, Motivators, EIQ, and Prepare/Enrich assessment tools. He holds four degrees (BA, MA, MACS, and PhD) and is a published author.

Dr. Anthony Randall is a transformative leader and the founder and president of Vanguard XXI, a leadership development and executive coaching company. Anthony has a rich background in teaching, training, and executive coaching. He is an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and proprietor of three ICF coaching courses. He’s authored three books, including his international award-winning and best-selling book, Practicing Excellence: Restoring Civility, Faith, and Trusted Leadership to the Public Square.

Mike Wall is a strong advocate for authentic servant leadership, and he genuinely cares about people. He is passionate about developing competent, highly functioning, and cohesive teams that take pride in their collective accomplishments. Mike is a visionary business development leader and retired Lieutenant Col. He is a certified leadership coach as well and currently pursuing his ICF ACC Coaching Credential.

1. How much of a commitment is these courses?

VTLC – 24 hours – 4 hours of pre-work (assessments). Monday through Friday, there are 2.5-hour virtual sessions each night (12 hours). Saturday will be an in-person session (8 hours)

2. Can I miss a session due to prior commitments, illnesses, etc.?

To receive credit, you must attend all virtual and in-person sessions. 


3. Will there be an offering at my location?

A course will be considered if your location is at or approaching capacity. Location sites will be determined by number of participants in that location. 


4. How do I sign up for this course?

5. How does the Employee Scholar Program (ESP) work?

6. How long is the training, and what is the time commitment?

The training consists of 65 hours of coursework, including synchronous and asynchronous learning, group mentor coaching, triad peer coaching, and one-on-one mentor coaching. Participants should plan to engage fully in the scheduled sessions and complete assignments between intensives.


7. How is the training delivered?

The training is entirely virtual, conducted via Zoom. There are five live intensive sessions, self-paced asynchronous work, and scheduled triad meetings.


8. What are the key topics covered in the training?

The course focuses on advanced coaching techniques aligned with the 8 ICF Core Competencies. Topics include higher-level coaching postures, psychological safety, effective communication, presence-based coaching, and team/group coaching.


9. What is the purpose of the triad peer coaching sessions?

Triad peer coaching sessions provide additional practice and reinforcement of the skills learned during intensives. Participants will coach and receive feedback from peers to refine their techniques.


10. What are the requirements for completing the program?

Participants must attend the required training hours, complete asynchronous work, participate in triad coaching, participate in mentor coaching, and submit a recorded coaching session and transcript for assessment.

12. How does mentor coaching work?

The VPCC course includes 7 hours of group mentor coaching during the intensives and 3 hours of one-on-one mentor coaching, scheduled individually with a mentor coach.
